Send a Kid to Camp

Dear Boys & Girls Club friend,

We have some good news and we need your help.

During the last six month months the Boys & Girls Club has undergone an unprecedented growth. Attendance at the Carter Road Teen Center is up 100 percent over just a year ago with more than 90 teens filling the center some days. At our Goodman Street location, the number of active families has grown to more than 105 with some days drawing more than 90 first through fifth graders for our after-school program.

In many ways, this growth is good news. More young Genevans and their families are counting on the support and guidance the Boys & Girls Club gives in character development, academics, athletics and preparation for a meaningful work life. However, the swelling numbers also are straining club finances.

As a result, the Boys & Girls Club will struggle this summer to meet the needs of kids who count on us for a safe place to go and for programs that help combat summer learning loss. For the first time, the club will be asking member families to contribute $50 per child, per week for the summer. That means $350 ($525 for two or more) for seven weeks of summer camp, including 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. programming, summer meals and field trips. Though that amount is far below what most kids pay for camp, sadly it is also more than many families in Geneva can afford to pay to keep their children safe and engaged while schools are closed.

We hope to build a substantial scholarship fund that will allow us to help as many children as possible take part in our summer efforts, even as our number of members swells.

Last year, more than 200 local youths participated in summer programs in which points earned on academic refreshers were awarded with trips to Sea Breeze and Darien Lake. It is a Geneva tradition we would like to keep going for these young students. However, staff, food and expenses have cost more than $75,000 for the summer program and we won’t be able to accept all members this year without significant help.

If you, your business or your organization could send just one Geneva kid to our camp this summer, we will assure the funds will go to families who would otherwise not be able to attend. You will be helping these young Genevans make the most of their cherished summer and assure they will return to school in the fall ready to move on and up.

Thank you for all you do.
